Pennsylvania has been a leader in highway safety for many decades: our vehicle safety inspection program began in 1928! Every motor vehicle registered in Pennsylvania, except for antiques, is required to have an annual safety inspection. Items checked include lights, windshield wipers and washers, horn, speedometer/odometer, glass, mirrors, seat belts, door and hood latches, brakes, wheels, tires, suspension, exhaust system, and body integrity. It’s a good program, and it has saved countless lives over the years. Here at Story’s Garage we value our customers, and we want you – and ourselves and our families – to be safe. That said, we’ll never tell you you have to fix something that isn’t legally required. When we inspect your car we’ll check it over very carefully, and if we see things that need attention, but aren’t required to pass inspection, we’ll tell you, but you’re always in complete control of what we will and won’t do.
Emissions Testing in Phoenixville, PA
As far as annual emissions testing goes, here in Phoenixville we’re in what’s called the Philadelphia Five-County Area, which means that cars registered in this area require a more thorough test than those in more rural parts of the Commonwealth. Your car actually has to pass an emissions test, or receive an exemption or waiver sticker, before it gets a safety inspection sticker. Many pre-1996 cars and light trucks require an actual tailpipe test; 1996 and newer vehicles get a computer check. In essence, the testing computer asks the car’s computer if everything is OK. If there’s an emissions-related problem, the Check Engine light will usually be on. The good news is that most modern cars pass an emissions test with no trouble. If there is an emissions-related problem with your car, Cliff can figure out what it is.
Here at Story’s garage we’re licensed by the Commonwealth to handle both emissions and state required safety inspections for all makes and models. If you’d like to learn more about the specific requirements for your vehicle please check out Penndot’s Website.
We know some folks dread the annual emissions and safety inspections, and we try our best to make your inspection experience as painless as possible.
